ARFID TREATMENT

ARFID Assessment

Treatment at CCEBT begins with a comprehensive ARFID assessment.  This three hour assessment offers parents/caregivers and children or adult clients to meet with a CCEBT senior clinician, registered dietician and speech and language pathologist. During the assessment, our team will complete a nutrition assessment, evaluate the maintaining factors related to ARFID, and make tailored treatment recommendations. Our diversity of presentation and high level of expertise provide families with a comprehensive roadmap for next steps.

Please email contact@ccebt.com to arrange for a complimentary phone intake consultation and to schedule an appointment in the ARFID Clinic in our Northbrook or Chicago office.

Treatment Offerings for ARFID:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for ARFID (CBT-AR)

CBT-AR supports individuals and their caregivers to work together to target different challenges related to eating, including fear of aversive consequences, low appetite/enjoyment of eating, and sensory issues related to eating.

Feeling and Body Investigators (FBI) (Group or Individual)

Feeling and Body Investigators is a treatment developed by Nancy Zucker, PhD and her team at Duke University. This is a playful and creative treatment that focuses on curiosity related to feelings, emotions, and body sensations.  Throughout this treatment young people and their parents are invited to engage in “detective investigations” to better understand their experiences and utilizing coping strategies.

ARFID Parent/Caregiver Intensive

This intensive offers an opportunity for parents and caregivers to:

  • Explain the multiple factors that can intersect to form and maintain a diagnosis of ARFID

  • Describe the treatment approaches designed to target the various mechanisms of ARFID

  • Demonstrate and practice the fundamentals of parenting strategies to facilitate a child’s uptake of treatment for ARFID.

Intensives are offered throughout the year.  Please email contact@ccebt.com to express interest in joining an Intensive.

Parent Management/Parent Support

Our therapists work collaboratively with parents related to creating an environment at home that promotes positive parent/child interactions related to food and eating and supports parents to engage in exposures, and other food/eating/weight related tasks.

ARFID Refresher and Social Group

This group is focused on forming a sense of community for kids who have received an ARFID diagnosis. There will be a refresher of FBI treatment, which is a treatment that centers:

  • a new, playful context for approaching uncertainty with curiosity

  • increased awareness of body sensations

  • exploration of body messages through the use of silly, fun characters

  • investigation tools for exploring what our bodies are trying to tell us

In addition to reviewing FBI, the group will focus on social connection through the use of games, feelings-based activities, and “detective” challenges. If a child has not participated in FBI yet but has an ARFID diagnosis and is interested in the group, they are welcome to join and can use the group as a “preview into FBI.”  Please email contact@ccebt.com to express interest in joining this group.

Selective Eating Summer Camp

In 2026 we provided an opportunity to combine learning and fun for selective eaters through our ARFID & Selective Eating Camp, hosted at the Kohl Children’s Museum in Glenview.

We integrated some typical summer camp activities with our Feelings and Body Investigator curriculum for kids ages 5-11. Throughout camp, kids worked together on exposures, build interoceptive awareness, and fostered a sense of community.  If you are interested in joining us in 2027 please email us at contact@ccebt.com
